Even the best trained dog can run off if something is more interesting then listening- you never know what is going to fit that criteria until it happens. If I am in a yard without a fence I will hook my dog to a long line- giving them plenty of room to explore and play while still being restricted to the property- they are only allowed to run "off leash" in fenced in areas.
