It's more invasive than a regular neuter. More like a spay actually because they have to go into the abdomen. Major surgery, but nothing that should stop you from doing it.
The only reason a specialist would be needed is if the vet was too concerned with the intestinal issues to proceed and that doesn't sound like the case here.
It does take longer than a regular neuter. Really shouldn't be a problem though.
