Default Henry went Cujo on me!

Need some advice......

Last night Henry and I were in my back yard so he could potty. He starts sniffing the air and then darts to the back fence. He is going crazy trying to sniff through the fence slats. He starts screaching and frantically scratching the fence. Then he starts digging up the dirt on the fence line while trying to fit his head under the fence. He does not listen to me to "come" to "stop" or anything. He is frantically trying to get to the other side of the fence. I try to pull him back to get his head from under the fence and he turns growls, snarls and snaps at me. I can't get him away from the fence. He is going non-stop digging under the fence. I got a broom and stuck the broom in front of the hole and Henry growled at me and tried to find another spot at the fence line. I finally pick him up and he again growls, snarls and snaps at me, getting my hand. However, his bite did not break the skin. If I had left him, he would have kept going until he could get under the fence.

I took him in the house and put him in his crate to calm down for about 20 min. before I let him out of the crate.

While he was in his crate, I went back outside to see if I could block off that portion of the fence that he dug under. That's when I noticed that there was a baby bird on the other side of the fence. It could barely walk and looked fairly new since it was still kinda wet.

I've had a similar situation with Henry and birds (see a previous post by me), but Henry was full on Cujo. It was like he was on crack. What should I have done in this situation?? I'm sure it will happen again, and I don't want to get bit again.
