I agree 100%. I would even take it a step further. The three of you should go for a walk. Start off with YOU holding Gatsby's leash with him in the middle of you and the dog-walker person (DWP). When you start off the DWP should walk far enough to the left of Gatsby that he is perfectly comfortable. She should very gradually move closer until she is close enough to hold onto the leash with you. Continue walking and chatting in a friendly manner until Gatsby is perfectly comfortable then you simply release the leash and continue walking. It should be so subtle that Gatsby doesn't realize that his mom isn't handling the leash any more. All during this walk you and the DWP should maintain a happy upbeat pace and tone of voice.
