no i didn't use a pattern. I just drew and cut a pattern on a newspaper and layed it on them to make sure it would fit and cut 2 pieces alike . I played it by ear. I am going to add a little extra to Buckeye's because he pulls so bad when other dogs are around. I am afraid he will put the velcro apart so I think i will add or replace the velcro with snap buckles for added security. I probably should buy one to see if i made it right. LOL. I am not even sure it is like any other or not. I went by pictures.
