Sorry, your pics are always so good that I assume you can read my mind too! I meant fill flash. You were shooting into the sun, and I would have expected the wheat to go black like some of the ones in the background appear. The only way I know to bring out the lighter tones in the wheat would be to "fill" in the shadows with a flash or reflected light. So my confusing question really comes down to this: Did you use your flash?
