I agree that it won't be so much the breed but rather the individual personalities of each dog. Size and gender could make a difference too.
For instance, I have a very dominant male Westie. As he grew, he got rather 'iffy' with strange dogs. My agility trainer - who had obverved him for over a year - recommended a small, female dog. Breed really didn't matter. But we did need a dog that didn't demand to be 'Queen' of the house since Ringo was clearly an Alpha dog.
We searched and found sweet little Lucy - who gets along with him perfectly with her sweet and submissive personality.
So it can be done - you just have to find the right dog.
And Ringo has made some changes too - Lucy always leads on our walks now AND she has a 'hissy fit' if she even thinks he is going to get on my bed. As long as I continue to feed him first and out the door first - and maintain some semblance of his alpha status - he is content to let her have most of the toys and to lead on our walks. He likes to go slow and smell everything and she likes to go fast.
You can do it if you really want but it might take some work!
