My experience is limited to the 2 Yorkies I have now, but based on them and a few things I have read from experienced breeder/exhibitors, the coat can go through many changes past the first year. Teddy's coat was never cottony, but it was difficult to work with during his first year. He is now 2 and his coat is silky and easy to care for.
