Maybe some training is in order. If the cat will defend itself then it will take care of that for you. Whap,Whap, and he will get the idea. If not then you have to do the training yourself, or make sure the cat is out of harms way. I would also never let him eat the cat hair, yuck. That can not be good for him.
Lucy basically ignored my 3 cats when we brought her home. Scamp the big Maine Coone will smack her if she gets too close, he is a brat, and she told him so. LOL Charlie my older cat likes to sleep with her on the couch, they aree great buddies. And Priscilla the little Persian will run from her, which is great fun for both. But mostly they just all try to crowd each other off my lap whenever possible.
Dogs and cats can and should get along, they just have to learn acceptible behavior.
