No, it is not normal for the vet to allow you in the room, and in my opinion, it is best that you not be there. It might be upsetting for you to see and it could be a distraction for the surgeon who should be focusing on your baby.
There is a sticky post in the health forum and in the YT library about pre-op questions: lab work, anesthesia protocol, recovery and pain management, overnight stay and whether or not staff is present.
