I advocate Victoria Stilwell's approach to allowing the dog to notify you with a bark, but the dog should be trained to obey the quiet command. We have not achieved this in our house when it comes to visitors, but we still work on it.

Victoria puts a mat by the door and trains dogs to sit quietly on the mat before the owner opens the door.
Okay, I've never heard of Victoria but I will google her. Yes, you are right completely eradicate was pretty bad word choice...lol. I was just a bit perplexed by his behavior because I've never seen him so worked up! I think I'll practice with my significant other have him go up and down the stairs (I'm sure he will LOVE that) and give Teddy treats when he doesn't bark up a storm? Hm I miss the days of "sit" and "down" lol This seems a bit challenging
