I don't think it is possible to completely eradicate this kind of barking, alarm or notification barking. Like a lot of Yorkies, my boys were late bloomers when it came to barking.

I advocate Victoria Stilwell's approach to allowing the dog to notify you with a bark, but the dog should be trained to obey the quiet command. We have not achieved this in our house when it comes to visitors, but we still work on it.

Victoria puts a mat by the door and trains dogs to sit quietly on the mat before the owner opens the door.
