I always thought of it as a girls name... If he is used to hearing the e in Zoe, if you change it.. I would make it ryme as not to confuse him too much.... I adopted a harley once and could not use the name, so we changed it to charlie. : )
You could call him.... Joey! Or stick to it and keep Zoe... either is really fine... I know lots of boys with girl sounding names.
