For the most recent year (1995) which statewide statistics are available, 382 animals and 2 humans were confirmed as having rabies. Confirmed cases of rabies in animals varied in this region: Alpine (0), Amador (1), El Dorado (6), Placer (45), and Sacramento (5). More recently (1998), the El Dorado County Public Health Laboratory tested 124 (mostly dogs, skunks, and bats) for rabies.
