I think that it's completely a matter of personal preference. Some people provide a toy specifically for this purpose and redirect their dog to it when he starts humping. Others just try to stop the behavior. I don't enjoy watching Joey hump things so I generally don't let him have larger soft toys because they seem to be hump-magnets.
