This is exactly what I was going to suggest. It is how I got our little rescue girl to walk on her leash. We started with putting her harness on all the time in the house and then added the leash (of course after several days of harness only). Just remember to make sure your baby is always in your line of sight if you have their harness/leash on in the house while they are free to roam so they don't get caught and freak out! Then you'd have that trauma to overcome.
BTW, only took Maddie about a week before I moved from inside the house to on our back patio with a loose leash and then into the yard and then me holding the leash around the house/ yard and then FINALLY moving out the front door.
I still get so proud of her because I know how much of her courage she has to tap in to for these tasks that come so natural for Monkey!
