I trim Copper myself. I like it short.
I guess you have to decide what kind of yorkie cut you prefer and then work with that. Since I have a boy (and live with a husband and son who would not understand the bow/topknot thing) I keep Copper cut short. I think he looks neat and well groomed with a short cut. In the winter, I let his body hair grow a little more, but still keep his face trimmed up.
It does take some practice to cut a yorkie's hair...but I'm convinced that I'm getting better at it. I just trimmed him today. It is not perfect, but I think he looks pretty good. And the best part...Copper doesn't care!
