Is stool firmness the only symptom that makes you think he is constipated? A firm stool is usually desirable. Diets high in protein will produce a very firm stool. As long as he is not straining or showing any signs of discomfort (restlessness, distended abdomen), and he is eliminating regularly, I wouldn't think he is constipated.
