I fed Gizmo Avoderm before he lost interest in it and I switched him to Innova. Both are good foods. I perfer them both over Royal Canin, but it's more personal choises I guess.
Since he is so young, it's good that you're getting the milk replacement as well as the kibble, this will help fill in for him not being with Momma. Until he's had his first round of shots, I would keep him away from other pets. Also, check with your vet when you can start giving him a flea/tick and heartworm preventative. Especially since it's the right season for ticks, indoor potty taining might be better until you get the okay to put him on it.
With regards to pet insurance, Gizmo has trupanion. I pay about $20 dollars a month and it cover him with a deductable of $250. I did this simply because we had an emergency vet visit which ended up costing us $390 as well as Gizmo is a BYB dog and who knows about the potential health problems he'll have.
