Where are the mats, under the legs and tummy area? If that's the case, trim the hair as short as possible...you can't really see the hair there if you keep any length of skirt, so it won't matter to cut it off.
The tummy isn't too bad. Mine seem to get mats under the back of the ear (like on the neck, a little bit under the ear), on the sides of their 'shoulders', back of neck, and then on the sides of back/upper legs where the back leg meets the body (this seems to be a painful area too). Some, we just cut off...but I do like to work out the ones I can.

This was recommended via PM, and think I'm going to try it: Amazon.com: The Stuff Pet Grooming Coat...Amazon.com: The Stuff Pet Grooming Coat...
And then I'm going to try this too, which looks really good! Has anyone used Isle of Dogs no. 63...? Amazon.com: Isle of Dogs Coature No. 63 Detangle...Amazon.com: Isle of Dogs Coature No. 63 Detangle...
