I disagree- she is part of my family and should be able to come with me without me having to have free entertainment written on my back. So next time I am stealing your "traveling petting zoo" remark!
I'm with you, I don't think it's rude and if someone takes it that way, well, idk, get your own dog to pet lol. I look at it this way - if I have my 6 yr. old son at a park and some random stranger ran over to him and started fawning all over him - I'd be appalled and so would my poor son. Or if someone came over to you in a mall and said "oh I just LOVE your dress!" or your hair or whatever and then proceeded to start touching you, umm not gonna fly. If your dog loves any and all attention, then ya of course, go for it, but we shouldn't expect them to always be ok with it just because they're cute and a dog. There's nothing wrong with letting someone pet your dog at all, as long as the DOG is ok with it. They deserve respect too

People do this with little babies too and it used to really make me mad. I was in Target once when my son was a baby in his infant car seat thing in the cart and some crazy lady started touching his face and kissed him! Hello! please stop touching my child you lunatic! LOL Idk, my dogs are well socialized and in general LOVE people, including kids, but there's a time and place to meet and be pet by strangers and others have to respect that. My general rule is always to leave it up to my dog whether or not they want someone to pet them, if they'd rather not, then sorry, you don't get to. I do the same when I see a dog somewhere that I admire. If I look at the dog and it seems to want to come to me, only then do I ask the owner if it's ok but I don't do it ever if someone is walking their dog, only if it's a situation where the dog is just "hangin out". I judge the dog's reaction first. JMHO
