Valentino (8 pounds) has a suuuuper thick, wooly coat that grows very quickly . We call him our "chia" pet becuase it grows so darn fast! I find that I do need to moniter the heat and usually give haircuts to him about every two weeks, focusing on different body parts, sounds silly, but all blends in really well and avoids the clipper burn you are talking about. Lolita (3.8) pounds has very fine, wispy hair and I do not use the clippers on her. I use a thinning shears and regular scissors. Hope this helps.
