This would be my same advice. I would tell my freind to not take the avoidance personally. Dogs that are hurt can even lash out at someone they have spent all their lives with. They don't want to be touched or approached. SHe does need to return to the vet or see a different one and find out exactly what is wrong with her baby. With a behavior such as this and crying out in pain, a speculation wouldn't satisfy me.
