Dog Walk Ian Dunbar's thing is get your dog to go potty (on command) at home, then reward them with a walk. Then you can easily walk at your pace and your stride, not stopping every 5 seconds.
The trainers hate those extend-a-leashes because they are constant pressure on the dog - therefore constant positive reinforcement of the pulling. So use a 5- or 6-foot lead and keep going. He'll get the idea.
My puppy is TERRIBLE on a leash, but it's my fault - she hasn't had a lot of practice. I'm taking the summer off and we're doing Puppy II classes and doing a lot of walking and doggy socializing.
