You should always consult your vet when making a decision like this.

None of these drugs are over the counter. They are sold by vets after a heartworm test is performed (usually not considered a good idea to give some preventatives if it's possible that the dog is heartworm positive). Annual testing should be done if a dog is on heartworm preventative.

Yes, all drugs have side effects. There might be a list on the package insert. Relatively speaking, they are generally considered safe.

They are not too expensive.

If I had two dogs on Interceptor year-round, it would be about $110 plus testing which is $25 (here anyway) give or take per dog.
