My 2 Yorkies are my first ones, so my experience is more limited. I would say Yorkies are sweet and loving, and a few are "docile," but for the most part, they are terriers....active, intense, headstrong. They require a lot of attention and activity.
My boys are pad trained and outdoor trained. I wouldn't describe them as yappy (barking all day), but they can be vocal in response to certain triggers.
A small poodle might be more appealing to you. My grandmother had several, the last one when she was in her 90s.
