Two things - to get the old stains and smell out, you need to use a good product that's made specifically for "pet stains". Nature's Miracle is a popular one, I personaly have found that The Equilizer (available though Amazon and some vet offices) works best.
If you aren't seeing him go each time, that's the issue right there. until a puppy is housbroken, whether it's a pee pad or outside or both, you have to watch them like a HAWK. Never let him out of your sight so that if he starts to "go" you can quickly scoop him up and place him on his pee pad. Every single time you see him go on it, praise like crazy! Through a party lol. The ONLY way to teach a dog not to do their business somewhere is to catch them in the act. If they have the chance to pee wherever they want when you're not looking, they'll never learn it's inapropriate because it's never corrected and he doesn't understand there's a certain place he can go.
When you can't keep a very close eye on him, he has to stay in his expen, that's the only way. He's using the pad fine in there because dogs instinctively won't potty in their "den". They don't have that same "instinct" with the rest of your house and yes, old smells will make him think it's ok to keep using that spot. Yorkies can take a long time to housebreak and it's not uncommon for a 7 month old to have accidents, shouldn't be constant though, if it is, you need to be more diligent in the training. |
