I have a rescue Shih Tzu / Maltese. She is high energy, needs long walks and lots of play time. Her behaviors were similar to your parent's pup. Though others may not agree, I used Bitter Apple Spray on furniture and items I didn't want chewed. It took awhile, but it did work. The pup doesn't mean to be bad. She is just playing, and chewing is a way to work off extra energy. With maturity, she will grow calmer. Take her on very long walks twice a day, and offer lots of chew toys and bones. With time and training it will get better.
