If there are going to be spats over toys and the puppy has just recently arrived to your house ~ I would pick up all the 'high value' toys that your older dog loves. He is NOT going to share everything with the new puppy right away.

Leave some toys that he doesn't care about down until your new puppy has made a smooth transition - set them up for success. OR take up all the toys until you see that everyone is getting along - at least in that moment, then introduce some of the toys that aren't favorites.

Eventually, you will be able to have all toys on the ground - but there may still be 'spats' from time to time. I agree with not interfering unless absolutely necessary (ie )someone is getting hurt or biting.
