This happened about 3-4 weeks ago, and her heat may have malfunctioned before then... as her pup is/was so sick... I believe CO2 settles lower so the dog would be more affected than people who breathe air higher up in a room...
It happened about the same time to us a few years back. I found black dots in a kleenex after blowing my nose but I assumed it was in the air. None of my pets (including birds) got sick as I removed everyone from the house then called the FD. The weather was warming up so we didn't notice that the furnace was or wasn't coming on at any given time.
