Congrats on your new puppy, Im so happy she has brought you some new found happiness since the loss of your other dog!
I have NEVER crated my dog either , its not my thing. I did use a play yard which in my opinion is much better for a puppy. I put bed, food water toys on one end and pee pads on the other. I think puppies need space to play and excercise.

these are great you can make different shapes and use it if you go out in the yard, beach, friends cookouts. I love mine!
