Like someone else said, they just protect the things you don't want peed on, they don't really deter the dog from going.
Also, be careful how long the dog has it on, if they do pee in it, you don't want the urine sitting next to their skin too long. I use mine when someone first comes to my house (my male has excited urination)- I take them off within 10 minutes of the person coming in. I also use them when I visit family and want to make extra sure their won't be a problem, but I check every 30 minutes and if it is wet, clean him good with a wipe and then change the band.
