Hi all. I used to be a regular here, but have not been logging on much lately. I just wanted to report the status of my sweet 10-year old Yorkie, Edith.
Edie tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in a hind leg about a year ago. After waiting to see if it would heal by itself, which the vet said might happen, and months of anti-inflammatories, she eventually had the surgery to fix the problem on January 6. While they had her there, they went ahead and fixed her Grade 3 luxating patella, which really wasn't bothering her.
Keeping Edie inactive was the hardest part of the recovery. She's 10 years old, but that never slowed her down. After 8 weeks, she was still not using the leg, and I thought that I had just poured $3000 down the drain. My vet said to be patient. And what do you know? At Week 9, she started using the leg as if nothing ever happened!!! We are thrilled with the results!!!!
I know that others here have not had success with this surgery, but thankfully we had a happy ending. I know Eddie (Alaska Yorkie) had the same surgery, and he had good results also.
If you have to go through this, and I hope you don't, just be prepared for a long recovery time.
