AKC can't check every dog before it's registered, they don't see the dogs, only the paperwork. AKC registration is NOT a way to base whether or not a breeder is good. There are soooo many other factors. I feel bad for your friend and the pups, but have to say I'm not surprized at all. You have to research more before you buy a dog from a breeder, not base it on a web site and pictures.
Google "Puppy Lemon Laws" and hopefully your friend can get her money back, it may require a lawyer though. Lesson learned, don't get a dog from a puppy mill and yes, naming dogs after "money" is definatly a BAD sign. Oy...
