Dog killed by tainted pet food

SPRINGFIELD - Officials with the MSPCA-Angell Western New England animal care facility confirmed yesterday they have had one case of a dog killed by a tainted brand of dog food that is being recalled in 24 states.

The dog, a white German shepherd, was brought to the animal hospital on Union Street on Monday and died two days later from extensive liver damage, said Dr. Kiko Bracker.

It had been confirmed that the dog was fed a type of dog food produced by Diamond Pet Foods that has been linked to numerous deaths and illnesses in dogs across the country.

Bracker said the center this week also treated four other dogs from the same family that showed symptoms of illness from contaminated food.

Each of those dogs showed improvement and was expected to be released from the hospital yesterday, he said.

A recall was declared after it was found several brands of dog and cat food made by the Diamond were tainted with aflatoxin, a toxic chemical byproduct from a fungus that can grow on corn and other crops used in pet food, according to information released by Diamond Pet Foods.

Bracker said the toxin in large amounts can inflict lethal damage on a dog's liver.

The recall was announced last week for 19 separate types of dog and cat food manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods under the brand names of "Diamond," "Country Value" and "Professional."

The recall was announced for Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, Alaska, Delaware, New Jersey, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, West Virginia, Virginia, Alabama, Florida and Mississippi.

The recall covers brands packaged at the company's Gaston, S.C., facility. The packages contain a capital 'G' for Gaston.

Bracker said pet owners who may have fed tainted food to their pets should look out for possible symptoms of illness, primarily vomiting, lethargy and loss of appetite.

They may also show sporadic bleeding or bruising, and because the liver is being affected, an ill dog may appear jaundiced, with yellow eyes, skin and ears, he said.
