My Grama used to find it perfectly acceptable to tell any of us if we had gained a bit of weight, lol. I probably wouldn't tell a stranger if their dog was fat, but like others have said, family or friends, I definatly would and I stay on their case about it lol. The vet I used to work for used to come right out and tell people in appointments - "your dog/cat is FAT" lol, I used to get so embarassed if I was in the exam with him and the owner he said it to was overweight themselves, oh boy, the looks he'd get.
