Kody will go stand/sit at the door or around the door when he has to go out. Sometimes if I don't see the signal he will come and bark in my face. If we totally miss it, then he will pee on he carpet (which is rare).
The poop thing is narrowed down to twice a day - usually early morning and evening. During the day while at work he's in his crate. As soon as we get home, it's off to potty outside.
