First, so sorry to hear about the ER visit; hope he is feeling better now.
You did the right thing about insurance, it can be very costly to own any dog if it gets sick. I had my troubles from my first claim as he was a rescue, but after telling them all I knew about his history (which wasn't much!) I did get approved - finally. Next time it should be easier.
I got the zero deductible so monthly cost is more. You are right, it is just the cost of one dinner a month.
