Don't let yourself be scared away from the yorkie if that's what you want. Alot of it is just a matter of personal opinion.
My kids were 5 & 3 when they got their first yorkie and grew up with her. They loved having a little dog and I think it made them more conscious of being gentle with all small animals. They are now in college & bought me my newest yorkie just this past January. I'm sure your teenage kids will be fine with a small pup.
Yes, yorkies do require a little more grooming than some dogs...but it's well worth the effort...just look at how cute they are
