I would say that the time is now!

If they are long or sharp, you should get on it! The longer you let them grow the longer the quick will grow, thats the part of the nail inside where the nerves and blood supply is. If you keep them trimmed it will never over grow. But if left to run wild, it will grow very long and you will end up with a very painfull cutting back that should only be done by a Prof. groomer or better yet.. your Vet! As you risk infection when you draw blood. I would start trimming ASAP! like when they are 6 to 8 weeks, even if you are not really taking anything off, its the handling and the going through the motions that will set them up for future grooming. Start too late and it may be a fight, but you can still get them used to it...

And make sure your First Aid kit has septic powder in it (spelling?) Just in case you ever go too short and draw blood.
