My Buddy is 1 and just had patella surgery 10 days ago. They removed his stitches today. We were told under no circumstances should he be walking unless he's "taking care of business." He is literally in his kennel 24/7 unless he's eating, drinking water, or we are holding him. The vet told us to give him therapy twice a day just to be sure that he is moving his leg. He only has 3 legs so we have to be extra careful with him, if we mess this up he will be in a wheel chair.

He wants to run around and play, but under doctor's orders he is to be confined to a kennel for another 3 weeks. He's not to happy about this (and he hates his cone too) but in the end he will be thankful.

I would for sure get him a cone for his head and restrict his activity.
