Yes they did use them for many years in both the coal and the slate mines.
The canary would die quickly at the slightest amount of gas.
I can not say I agree with using a canary but at the time it was the only way they new of detecting it.

The good news was no canary was ever known to have died through passive smoking in a mine. !!!
