That would actually be a great idea (that I may try with my Beagle)! The Preference is veggies and some fruit and whole grains only (plus minerals and vitamins) and you add your own meat

As far as I've noticed, most of the good foods start lacking ingredient wise when it comes to their "weight management" or low fat or low calorie formulas (they have a tendancy to just put more grains in and cut down on meat, which won't help your cause or necessarily be healthy).

You're other option is keep the food you use now, but cut back and add pulverized veggies.

You could also look for a food that has lamb or fish as the protein source, as far as I know, those are lower in fat and calories without having to go the "weight management food" route. You can look on the bag you have now and note the k/cals per cup, then take a trip to the pet store and read the labels comparing them to yours and get one with less calories per cup
