If the intestines are just irritated, the vet may see some slight changes. Xrays are actually an amazing, quick way to take a quick look at what is going on. Of course not everything shows up, but it's better than nothing.
And by some slim chance it's an obstruction, xrays minus the barium are still very useless in diagnosing it in a lot of cases.
