Mine all have their own crate and "ask" to go to bed at night. Around 8-8:30. Tonight Gracie wanted in her crate at 7:00 and i had to tell her "it's too early to go to bed" (yes, they figured out that early to bed is early to rise). When it is "bedtime" for them we tell them "bedtime" and they all go to their individual crate and wait for us to put them in.
They have the cutesy beds (outside of a crate) for laying around/napping during the day. So I don't think you should be concerned about how long he sleeps at night in a crate...if he's happy, let him stay there at night... not to mention you know he's safe.
I like to know mine aren't finding fuzz or something else they shouldn't be eating/or chewing on a cord/what-have-you while I'm asleep.
