Calleigh doesn't bother the birds unless they are walking on the ground. Then she will try to catch them. I think she knows they will fly away. She does go crazy with chipmunks and squirrels. I guess it's the natural ratter instinct these dogs have. I saw a program a week a week or so ago [it was a little disturbing because I love all animals] where silky terriers were hunting and killing rats in a barn. I was so amazed at how fast they caught them, killed them, and moved right on to the next one. It seemed to be their job on this particular farm.
