I totally understand- I live in an apartment too.

What I would recommend then is trying to crate train during the day like you said- if your sure no one is home during the day. First start putting her in the crate, shutting the door and then opening the door right away and give her a treat. Do this many times. Then put her in the crate, shut the door, leave it shut for 10 seconds, open the door give her a treat. Keep repeating this and increasing the time with the door shut. Eventually you will work up to the point where you can walk away for periods of time and come back and treat her ONLY if she is being quiet.

You can also start feeding her in her crate- with the door open- so she associates the crate with a positive time (eating).
