I do believe prescription diets have their place- I have one cat on a prescription diet now. However, I really hate when vets prescribe a prescription diet solely for weight control, or tartar control- things that can very easily be controlled in other ways. I don't know the specifics of wellness, but I would just make sure my dogs were on a low fat/ low calorie food, give less food and more veggies, and increase their exercise if they needed to lose weight.
