Demodex is present on most dogs, it is the puppy's immune system that must fight these off. A healthy immune system does just that, but when the immune system is immature or poorly working the Demodex take over and you see scaly patches with hair loss. Times of stress for an animal can make this worse also. Treament varies and some just get better without treatment. Vets use shampoos to help with the symptoms but most do not get into the follicle where the mange lives. If the Demodex is greater than 5 areas over age of around 7 months and becomes Generalized then they treat with Ivermectin daily or Revolution (I think) daily but the doses are quite high and the treatment is risky.

One big sign is around the eyes. There is usually hair loss there with not some much of the dry skin/scaling and the area appears pink in a circular area around them.
