The ASPCA took it very seriously and instructed me to induce vomiting at home and take back the gum. Barney didn't vomit, and I did not take him in. If the gum had been fresh, I'd have taken him in and not called the hotline.

I wonder if xylitol affects dogs differently depending on the individual. I think I have heard of that in the past.

I also want to point out that Xylitol is an organic compound and is not artificial. It naturally occurs in various foods including fruits and veggies.
It's just another reason to feed your dog just anything you think is ok.
Buster was out walking with my roommate and came across all ready chewed gum and swallowed a big wad. I was concerned as my roommate said it was a big wad so I checked for possible problems with the gum clogging him up and that is when I learned about the xylitol. I also called the ASPCA hotline and they recommended that I bring him to the vet and induce vomiting as well. Since I did not know the size of the wad or if the gum did contain xylitol I went ahead to the vet. Luckily for me and for Buster everything turned out ok. I am really shocked to read about the dental chews and water additives. I will have to check my labels out tonight. I never would have imagined that they would put that in a product for dogs!!! Thanks for the information.
